The Naginata are amongst the toughest units in the game. With their high defence factor they can withstand much more archer fire or hand-to-hand combat than any other unit. They are perfect for leading assaults on bridges or into castles, and perfect for defence in either of these two cases. By placing a unit of naginata in front of your army in loose formation you can absorb all the enemy archer fire with minimal casualties.
