From previews to reviews - Friday, August 24, 2001
The Shôgun: Total War Mongol Invasion expansion pack, and its counterpart for new players, the Shôgun Total War Warlord Edition, are finally being doled out to the common public after the long wait. The release date was the 7th of August in North America, and certain stores in Europe carry it as of today (the 24th of August) - it seems others will still have to wait until the 28th.

Meanwhile, there is no need for previews anymore. Now, instead of speculation, we can have actual accounts of play and informed opinions - not to mention the fact that the reviews serve as excellent summaries of all the new features for those among us who haven't heard the big news yet. Today's example of a review comes from PC.IGN.com. Click here to read it.

New MI Maps. - Tuesday, August 21, 2001
I made a pair of new MI maps, I hope you enjoy them:

An ideal map for advanced players, Farmlands_KM features flat yet interesting terrain which is earmarked by several independent communities separated by earthen levies. Attack and defense alike can prove challenging within the confines of hamlets!

Designed primarily as a multiplayer map Levy_KM features an assortment of small rice paddies separated by a series of inter-connecting earthen levies. The terrain is designed to be impartial whilst at the same time imparting an interesting and unique challenge of the players tactical abilities.

Sad News - Monday, August 20, 2001
In this post on the .Com forum, Richie Skinner, Web Marketing Manager of Creative-Assembly, has stated that there will be no future patches for the original Shogun: Total War and the much-anticipated Multiplayer Campaign is probably no more than a dream.

EA have stated that The Mongol Invasion will be on shelves in all territories on Friday 24th August and the latest date for Warlord Edition is ship on 21st September and street on 28th September.

To add to the sad news, the Dread League has been stopped, but fortunately the excitement of new tactics and mods for the x-pack still keeps our souls alive.

New Mapsection - Sunday, August 12, 2001
The expansionpack has arrived in Taiwan and the USA. People will make maps, and lots of them we hope. I'm really looking forward to play on your maps.

In order to help both the mapmakers and the users of the maps, I've made a Guideline. The first part of it states the requirements for a mapzip. It also explains the usefulness of a TAG in order to keep it organised for the users of the maps and by giving you the ability to use any name for a map without messing online gameplay.

The second part explains the making of a TGA preview of your map and the creating of zipfiles. It also offers 'small' shareware tools to edit TGA files and to make zip files. Thanks to Kraellin for providing the Shareware version of Paint Shop Pro 4.12 (only 2.9 mb).

Take a look at the Guideline please and upload your most excellent battlemaps to the org.

Crusader: Total War Preview - Sunday, August 5, 2001
On Issue 100 of the popular magazine PC Gamer UK, a 4-page preview of the upcoming Shogun sequel: Crusader: Total War. Swoosh So was so kind to forward me this preview and here is a cut-down of the main points regarding this great game:

- Stretching 400 years of European history.
- Starting from the first crusades in the Middle East (1000's), to the fall of Constantinople (renamed Istanbul), to the rise of the 'infidel' Turk until the reconquista in Spain (when Catholics reclaimed Spain from the Moors- 1400's.)
- Nations involved: England, Holy Roman Empire, France, Christian Spain, The Papacy, Poland, The Norsemen, The Byzantines, The Russian Principalities and the Islamic Almohad.
- 60 different sorts of unit types, having unique different units for different civilizations
- New units like the longbow, the cannon and the pike and shot armies.
- More units with specific specialized abilities like the Battlefield Ninja in Shogun.
- Castles and sieges will more exciting as an army can buy artillery and catapults to bombard the walls of a castle; and the defender can purchase additional features to his castle by for example re-enforcing fortifications or adding arrow tower ramparts and artillery towers.
- Perhaps the most striking change is the way the game will deal with your special personage. Gone is the simple honour system of Shogun, it is more like RPG (role-playing) style character development.
- There will be more characters like governors, princesses, cardinals, diplomats, papal envoys, heretics, witch finders, inquisitors and philosophers.
- Over time your character would develop certain virtues and vices and one will be able to choose the virtues/vices he wants, permitting control on your character development. Some other virtues/vices are randomly assigned according to the character's actions, example if you kill a bishop you would acquire the vice of a priest slayer. Your population won't be happy of this but you can keep the vice secret, unless an enemy spy brings the secret vices into the open!
- In as similar way that Shogun found inspiration from Sun Tzu's The Art Of War, Crusader: Total War will be based on Machiavelli's The Prince, who is considered the father of political science.
- There will be different campaign modes.
- Enhanced graphics engine.

As you can see, this game will be even more Total War! In the meantime the Mongols arrive in USA tommorow and PC Gamer UK also placed the Total War series as the 4th best game of all time...

Today we also inform you that the Honor Society's website has been moved onto your server and now the site is hosted by .Org! Find the new society site here.

Crusader: Total War - Thursday, August 2, 2001
For the Friday's Honour Day to be anticipated by one day, it had to be something big. Totalwar.Com have confirmed that the next Total War game will be based on the time of the Crusades!

Here is an extract from the Community Site:

Set in Europe during the Middle Ages, a period of 400+ years when all of Europe was in a state of almost constant warfare and violent upheaval. This is the period from the First Crusade to the Holy Land of Jerusalem, to the fall of Constantinople and the Spanish Reconquista.

The Official Site will be releasing more information over the next Honour Days and a spanking new site on Total War 2 will be published soon.

In the meantime don't forget that the Mongols are coming in the next few days!
